A factory safety manager reviews the incident log for the past 12 months. There were nine foot injuries. Six of the injured workers were wearing general-purpose work shoes without steel toe caps or puncture-resistant midsoles. The other three were wearing Functional Shoes with both features. The injuries in the first group were severe: three toe fractures from falling objects, two puncture wounds from nails, and one crushed metatarsal. The injuries in the second group were minor: one bruise from a falling object that exceeded the rated impact, and two cases of discomfort from poorly fitted shoes. The safety manager uses this data to justify a plant-wide upgrade to certified Functional Shoes. This guide explains why steel toe caps and puncture-resistant midsoles are the two most critical features in safety footwear.
Foot injuries in industrial workplaces fall into two categories: impact injuries and penetration injuries. Impact injuries occur when a heavy object falls on the foot. The most common injuries are toe fractures, metatarsal fractures, and crush injuries. Penetration injuries occur when a sharp object pierces the sole of the shoe. The most common injuries are puncture wounds to the sole of the foot, which can lead to infection and disability. The table below shows the frequency and severity of these injuries in a typical manufacturing plant.
| Injury type | Cause | Frequency | Average lost time |
| Toe fracture | Falling object | 40% of foot injuries | 15 – 30 days |
| Metatarsal fracture | Falling object or roll-over | 15% of foot injuries | 30 – 60 days |
| Puncture wound | Nail, screw, or wire | 25% of foot injuries | 5 – 15 days |
| Crush injury | Heavy object or vehicle | 10% of foot injuries | 60 – 120 days |
| Sprain or strain | Slip or uneven surface | 10% of foot injuries | 3 – 10 days |
In our factory, we manufacture Functional Shoes with steel toe caps and puncture-resistant midsoles. The combination of these two features addresses 65 percent of the foot injuries shown in the table. The remaining injuries, such as sprains and strains, require other features such as slip-resistant outsoles and ankle support. Xiamen Biyate Imp.&Exp.Co.,Ltd has been manufacturing safety footwear for over 12 years.
A steel toe cap is a protective shell that is inserted between the upper and the lining of the shoe. It covers the toes and the metatarsal heads. When an object falls on the toe, the cap distributes the impact force over a larger area and prevents the object from crushing the toes. The performance of the cap is rated by the maximum impact energy it can withstand and the clearance it maintains above the toes after impact. The table below shows the protection ratings for different toe cap materials.
| Toe cap material | Impact rating | Compression rating | Weight per pair | Typical standard |
| Steel | 200 J | 15 kN | +120 g | EN ISO 20345 S1 |
| Aluminum | 200 J | 15 kN | +80 g | EN ISO 20345 S1 |
| Composite (fiberglass) | 200 J | 15 kN | +60 g | EN ISO 20345 S1 |
| Steel (high performance) | 250 J | 20 kN | +140 g | ASTM F2413 |
The 200 J impact rating means that the toe cap can withstand the impact of a 20 kg object dropped from a height of 1 meter. After the impact, the cap must maintain a clearance of at least 15 mm above the toes. The steel toe cap provides the highest level of protection per unit of weight. Aluminum and composite caps are lighter but may not provide the same level of protection in extreme conditions. In our factory, we use steel toe caps that meet EN ISO 20345 and ASTM F2413. Biyate tests every batch of toe caps for impact and compression resistance.
A puncture-resistant midsole is a flexible plate that is inserted between the insole and the outsole. It prevents sharp objects from penetrating the sole of the shoe. The performance of the midsole is rated by the force required to penetrate it. The standard test uses a nail with a 4.5 mm diameter and a sharp point. The nail is driven into the sole at a specified speed, and the force required to penetrate is measured. The table below shows the protection ratings for different midsole materials.
| Midsole material | Penetration resistance | Flexibility | Weight per pair | Typical standard |
| Steel plate | > 1,100 N | Low | +180 g | EN ISO 20345 P |
| Kevlar / aramid fiber | > 1,100 N | High | +80 g | EN ISO 20345 P |
| Composite (non-metal) | > 1,100 N | Moderate | +100 g | ASTM F2413 PR |
Safety manager's note: The steel plate midsole provides the highest penetration resistance and is the most durable. However, it is rigid and can be uncomfortable for workers who walk long distances. The Kevlar midsole is lighter and more flexible, which improves comfort and reduces fatigue. The composite midsole is a compromise. In our factory, we recommend the Kevlar midsole for workers who walk more than 8 kilometers per day and the steel plate midsole for workers in high-risk areas with exposed nails and rebar. Biyate offers all three options.
The certification of Functional Shoes is the only reliable evidence that the product meets the claimed protection level. The safety manager should verify three things. First, the certification mark. The shoe should carry the CE mark (for Europe) or the ASTM mark (for North America). Second, the protection code. The code indicates the level of protection. For example, S1 means antistatic, energy absorption in the heel, and resistance to fuel oil. P means puncture resistance. Third, the test report. The manufacturer should provide a test report from an accredited laboratory. The table below shows the common protection codes and their meaning.
| Protection code | Meaning | Test standard |
| SB | Basic requirements (toe cap 200 J) | EN ISO 20345 |
| S1 | SB + antistatic + heel energy absorption + fuel oil resistance | EN ISO 20345 |
| S1P | S1 + puncture resistance (1,100 N) | EN ISO 20345 |
| S3 | S1P + water penetration resistance + cleated outsole | EN ISO 20345 |
| PR | Puncture resistance (ASTM) | ASTM F2413 |
In our factory, we provide the certification documents and test reports with every shipment of Functional Shoes. We also mark each shoe with the protection code and the certification body. Xiamen Biyate Imp.&Exp.Co.,Ltd recommends that the safety manager verify the certification before accepting a new supplier. The verification should include checking the certification body's website to confirm that the certificate is valid.
Steel toe caps and puncture-resistant midsoles are the two most critical features in Functional Shoes. The steel toe cap protects against impact injuries from falling objects. The puncture-resistant midsole protects against penetration injuries from nails and sharp debris. Together, they address 65 percent of the foot injuries in a typical industrial workplace. The safety manager should verify the certification of the shoes, select the appropriate toe cap and midsole material for the application, and inspect the shoes regularly. By specifying certified Functional Shoes with these features, the safety manager can reduce foot injuries and lost time.
